One Cobham: Uniting Local Businesses to Boost Cobham’s Economy and Heritage

In 2023, Cobham businesses supported a proposal to create a Business Improvement District (BID), leading to the formation of One Cobham. This not-for-profit organisation is dedicated to bringing to life the key priorities outlined in the BID business plan, with an investment of over £800,000 planned for Cobham over the next five years.

One Cobham acts as a catalyst for the sustained success of Cobham’s local economy. It provides a dynamic platform to foster growth for local businesses while creating an attractive destination for residents and visitors. The organisation’s mission is to merge tradition with innovation to unlock the full potential of the village.

Cobham is a village rich in history, known for its connections to famous writers and poets, the tales of Gerrard Winstanley and the Diggers, and historic landmarks such as Cobham Mill and Painshill Park. One Cobham is committed to protecting this heritage by offering moments of nostalgia and opportunities to explore the past, ensuring that Cobham’s rich history is celebrated and shared across generations.

Destination

Already a desirable location with a variety of shops, restaurants, cafes, and lifestyle venues, Cobham’s appeal will be enhanced through a carefully curated digital and social media presence alongside tailored events programmes. These efforts aim to increase activity in the area and make Cobham an excellent place to own and operate a business.

Community

Building on the work of the Chamber of Commerce, One Cobham focuses on nurturing a strong and connected community. The organisation is committed to fostering strong relationships and supporting initiatives that benefit business owners, community partners, and residents. Their goal is for everyone to feel valued, heard, and empowered.

Future

One Cobham is dedicated to future-proofing Cobham’s high street to ensure it remains a thriving hub for generations to come. Recognising the challenges faced by high streets nationwide, the organisation is committed to providing economic, digital, and sustainability-focused solutions to support local businesses. By preserving heritage and embracing innovation, One Cobham aims to safeguard the high street’s vital role in the economic, social, and cultural fabric of the village.

Why One Cobham?

The name One Cobham reflects the village’s uniqueness and the spirit of unity within the community. It represents a commitment to working together to uphold Cobham as a successful business district.

What is a BID?

Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) give a voice to business communities by championing local priorities and ensuring that the right people are involved in decision-making. Formed on the principle that businesses are stronger together, BIDs allow owners and representatives to focus on shared objectives to improve their trading environment.

BIDs are established through a ballot of eligible businesses and operate in five-year terms. Funding comes from mandatory business levies and voluntary contributions. Cobham’s BID expects to raise over £800,000 in its first term to fund strategic and operational projects aligned with the original BID business plan.
